The 70's were all about working with raw materials in a really archaic fashion. He used very simple objects that can otherwise be seen as "trash" and implied them as much more important in the construction. He started working with cloth through screen printing and tying it or attaching it to wooden objects. Cardboard was also used in a sculptural way to either form building like structures or abstract forms. There were numerous lithographs done as well in the late 60s, early 70s. In the collage "Signs", it has many unfortunate circumstances such as the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy and the beginning of the Vietnam War. The images he used in the collage were that of chaos and despair. The only sign of evolution was the astronaut implying the landing on the moon of 1969.  The title makes me question his thoughts of the 1960's and whether or not he thought things would progress or worsen. This could have been unconscious foreshadowing on what he thought was to come. I am also fascinated by the "Sor Aqua" which has a hanging architectural beam that holds a suspended jug of some kind. Maybe he was implying that the structure is what is filling up the tub. The beam could be a leader of some sort that is holding the nation together and flourishing the economy or "water." None of the scenarios may be true. This is all food for thought.
