The 1980's was all over the place in terms of the mediums Rauschenberg used. He was commissioned to paint an entire BMW for the BMW Art Car Project. There was many series of works during this time such as a number of metal sculptures called the Glut series. A couple of the pieces look as if they were made from junkyard parts. He continued doing lithographs and silk screening. The Samarkand Stitches were created from a collage of pictures Rauschenberg took from his travels to Uzbekistan that were screen printed on the fabric. Many of the pictures from the 1990s cannot be downloaded. Click the link for an array of work from the 1990s.
Robert Rauschenberg 1990s
He reverted back to simplistic picture collages without paint or bunched paper. His sculptures became much more simplistic, clean and slightly geometric. He did a series of Bicyloids that were made from neon lights wrapped around bikes. The "Echo Echo" sculpture of the windmill is particularly interesting. Each blade has different images on it. A wheel or spinning circle seemed to a common theme in Rauschenberg's work.
